Nightbane

Nightbane by Alex Aster is the second book in the Lightlark series, a gripping fantasy series with a deadly love triangle. In the first book we were introduced to Isla, ruler of the Wildlings. It would be her first time participating in the Centennial, a tournament held every century in an effort to break the curses that had plagued the Wildlings, Sunlings, Moonlings, Nightlings, and Skylings for centuries. Each species had a deadly curse tailored to their powers and abilities. For example, the Sunlings were cursed to die if they went out during the day. For the Nightlings, it was the opposite, with them being cursed if they went out during the night. In the Centennial, the ruler of each species would be participating. In the first book, Isla managed to break the curse despite being betrayed by her best friend, Celeste (now deceased) and her former love interest, Grimshaw, ruler of the Nightlings. Now she and Oro, king of Lightlark and the Sunlings prepare for war.

Personally, I preferred the first book over this one as I felt that the first book had more action and excitement. This book mainly explored Isla’s struggles with her self-worth and perception of herself, as well as her conflicting emotions as her memories with Grim returned. In addition, the whole book they were mainly preparing for the battle with Grim. Many new characters were introduced, but they weren’t as fleshed out. Hopefully we will get to learn more about them and their stories in the next book. The ending was rather abrupt and might leave some readers disappointed. The love triangles plays a big part in the book, as Isla unravels her feelings toward both Grim and Oro. The love triangle plays a big part in the series, so readers who prefer romance will enjoy this book. Isla’s feelings are still very much conflicted, and it is clear that both of them hold a place in her heart.

Overall Nightbane was a good sequel and I am excited to read the next book, with the hopes that there will be more action and development of the plot.
